"The 29th" By: Katie J.
Chapter One
It had been a little more then three years since Jess Harper came to live at the Sherman Ranch and Relay Station. Slim and Jess were the best of friends and closer then brothers. They worked hard each day to keep up with the demands of the ranch, but it was home permanently for Jess, now that Slim had made him a partner and he couldn't be happier. Mike and Daisy along with Slim were now his family and he settled in to a comfortable new life.
There was a strong bond between them and during the times when either was injured or sick, they were there for each other. Whatever it took they did it, whether it was changing a bandage, bring down a fever, setting broken limbs or just listening to what the other need to say.
On a more pleasant note, they loved to have fun, and many times after a hard day at work they would go fishing. Other times they would just rest under a tree and talk or pull their hats down over their eyes and sleep. They also enjoyed going on picnics with Mike and Daisy. Daisy was a good cook and she would always prepare a wonderful meal and apple pie for them to enjoy. A good practical joke was always being thought up, which usually ended with one chasing the other.
There had been much to keep them busy. They broke horses each year to sell to the army and to use on the ranch. There was always fences to mend and repairs to the house. Rounding up the stray cattle for the winter, and dealing with what ever the weather dished out to them.
Both Jess and Slim had filled in as deputies for Mort Cory whenever he needed them too. Most of the time it was just staying to watch the town to be sure the Saturday night drunks behaved themselves. Sometimes it was more serious and many times not without the cost of one or both being injured. Stage holdups, bank robbery, or joining the posies in search of the outlaws was all part of the job. At times it called for them to testify against the men who were captured.
Chapter Two
July 29th
It was very hot and it was still early in the morning, they knew it was going to be hard to get much work done today. "Jess, do think after school today we could go fishin' or swimmin'?" Mike asked. "Slim and I are workin' on the fence by the north ridge today, but I don't see any reason why not, it will be too hot by then to keep work anyway." Mike let out a squeal of joy and went back to eating his breakfast. "Jess you coming!" Slim yelled from the front yard. Jess opened the door and yelled back "be right there Slim, just been waiting for Daisy to finish packing up some food for later." "Thanks Daisy," Jess said as he took the sack of food and reaching over gave her a kiss on the cheek, saying "you're a treasure Daisy." Jess grabbed his hat and walked out the door. Slim was already saddled up and stated that he also remembered to fill the canteens. With that they rode up to the crest of the hill and over to the north ridge. It took about half hour to get there. The cows had really done a job on this section of fence, and a lot of posts would have to be repaired.
They worked hard and at lunch time they were ready for a break.
When they returned to work they left there horses tied under the tree in the shade with plenty of good graze. Neither Slim nor Jess noticed the figure dressed in black slowly moving up by the horses. The figure approached Traveler, easy boy, the figure said reaching for Jess' canteen. The figure unscrewed the cap and poured something in. Replacing it the figure disappeared back into the trees.
Around two they decided to call it quits for today, strode back to their horse, had a drink and headed for home. About five minutes later Jess pulled Traveler to a halt. "Why we stoppin' Jess?" Slim asked. Jess answered that his head had started to spin and he felt sick, and with that he leaped off Traveler, falling to his knees and retched violently. Slim climbed down grabbing his canteen and knelt down by Jess. Slim laid a comforting hand on Jess' back. Jess continued until the dry heaves subsided, and then falling on his side he lay on the grass exhausted and covered with sweat. Slim wet his bandana and knelt behind Jess. Slim pulled him up in front of him and tipped Jess' head back on his shoulder as he placed the wet bandana on Jess' forehead. "You must a gotten to much sun." Slim stated. After another bout with dry heaves Jess' color turned gray and Slim knew he needed to get Jess home. Laying Jess down on the grass, Slim return his canteen and tied Travelers reins to Alamo. He helped Jess up on Alamo and climbed up behind Jess, he knew Jess was too weak to ride alone and to his surprise Jess didn't complain. Slim held tight to Jess as the dry heaves continued to zap his strength. "Almost home Jess." Slim whispered, but Jess didn't respond.
As they entered the yard, Mike was outside with Buttons, He ran to the horses. "What's wrong with Jess?" Mike asked. "I think he just got to much sun today and it made him sick." Slim answered. By now Jess was shivering. Mike could you please take the horses in the barn and I'll unsaddle them later. Daisy appeared in the doorway and upon seeing Jess she told Mike to hold the door and went into the bedroom to turn down the bed. Slim helped Jess down from Alamo and into the bedroom. As he eased Jess onto the bed, Daisy reached over an laid her hand on his forehead. Jess' eyes were shut and he was shivering. Daisy asked him how he felt, he said his throat and stomach hurt and he was very cold. "His fever is very high Slim, what happened?" "I don't know Daisy, we were working just like yesterday and it's no hotter today then yesterday, in fact it's a little cooler and we even quit work early, but on the way back, he stopped, said his head was spinning and he got sick." "I was riding double with him and I could feel him getting warmer." Slim replied. "I though he might be sun sick." Daisy said "it sounds like it, but if he is no better by the evening stage we probably should ask Mose to send Seth out." All the while they talked Slim was removing Jess' boots and gun while Daisy removed his shirt and undershirt.
Daisy went to the kitchen for a pan of cool water, rubbing alcohol and a clean towel. While she was gone Slim finished removing Jess' clothes and pulled up the covers. Daisy wiped down his face and arms as Slim applied the rubbing alcohol to his chest. Mike stood in the bedroom doorway "is Jess okay?" Slim said that they just need to get his fever down and then he would be alright. Slim asked Mike to bring Jess a glass of water. Mike handed the glass to Slim, as he lifted Jess' head and forced a small amount of water though his lips and Jess swallowed. He waited a few minutes before giving him more to make sure it stayed down, and so far it did. Mike sat at the bottom of the bed staring at Jess. Slim touching Daisy' arm tilted his head toward Mike. "Mike do you mind giving me a hand in the kitchen fixing supper and broth for Jess." "Alright Aunt Daisy." Mike Said and he followed her out of the room. Slim continued to tend to Jess and gave him all the water he would take. His fever seemed to lessen a bit, but not enough and he knew Seth would be needed.
When the stage arrived Daisy told Mose the situation and after changing the team he left for Laramie. Mose promised to send Seth out as soon as he could. When Seth arrived, Jess was not much better; he gave him something to take the fever down as Slim told him the events of the day. Seth asked were they had gotten their water from to fill the canteens and Slim said that he had filled both from the pump before they left this morning. "Could you bring in the canteens so we can check the water?" Seth asked. Before Slim could respond Mike was running out the door yelling back "I'll get them!" Daisy stayed with Jess as Seth and Slim went to the kitchen and poured water from both canteens in two separate glasses. The water from Slims canteen was clear but Jess' was cloudy with a slightly green tint. Slim was taken back, saying I know I cleaned and filled both the canteens this morning. Seth smelled the water, and although it looked like swamp water, the smell was wrong. Seth stated that he wasn't sure what was wrong with the water, but it was most definitely what was wrong with Jess. Seth said we needed to flush the toxin from Jess and the best way to do that was to get him to drink as much water as possible and to take the medicine. Jess's fever was still high and he struggled away from the cup each time the water was forced over his lips. It was three more days before Jess' fever finally broke and he fell into a restful and exhausted sleep.
Jess did not wake up until late the next afternoon. "Slim," Jess whispered, "right here Jess" as he reached out touching Jess's forehead and letting his hand rest on Jess' shoulder. "Feeling Better?" Slim asked. "A little I guess just tired and my stomach hurts." "What happened?" "Seth thinks the water in your canteen was bad, it looked like swamp water, but I swear Jess, I cleaned it before I filled it, maybe something got in from the pump, I'm sorry Jess." Slim said. "Its okay Slim, its not your fault, it just happened." Thanks Jess. It was three more days before Jess was up and about, and by the end of the week things were pretty much back to normal. Slim wouldn't let Jess work fence for another week and bought him a new canteen. Gradually that event was forgotten.
Chapter Three
September 29
It was now the end of September and the weather had started getting cooler. The summer chores were done and they were getting ready for fall and winter. Slim called to Jess, saying he was all set and was heading into town with Daisy and Mike to get the supplies for the week. Jess cleaned out the barn and brushed Alamo and Traveler down. After a small break he removed his shirt and started to chop wood for the cooler weather that was coming. He knew the stage was due in an hour from now. After thirty minutes of chopping, he stopped as he thought he heard a noise. Just then a raccoon ran past the wood pile, he smiled and raised the ax to chop some more wood, but before he could get it above his head something hit him in the shoulder knocking him to the ground. He lay there for a moment; the pain was excruciating, his hand reached up to his shoulder and his fingers folded around the shaft of an arrow. His mind raced - there are no Indians around, they had all been moved to the reservation. He tried to pull himself up, his chest burned with pain. He could feel the blood running down; he fell back - passing out.
The stage pulled up into the yard. Mose yelled "hello in the house, Jess you here!" He started for the barn when he saw a wagon also pulling up. It was Slim, Daisy and Mike returning from town. "Glad I won't have to change the horses myself" Mose growled. "Jess is here somewhere" Slim said. "Mike see if he's in the barn." Mike ran to the barn, but not finding Jess there he started across the yard back to the house. He stopped short when he saw Jess laying in the side yard. Mike yelled and Slim came running, "what's wrong Mike!" Mike just pointed to the place where Jess was laying on the ground his chest covered in blood. Slim ran to Jess, he gently touched his chest, "he's alive!" he yelled back to the others. Daisy was just standing there as if in shock. Slim yelled to her, "He's going to need you Daisy!" Oh yes, of course, Daisy answered. Finding her composure she went into the house to get the water boiling and tear up bandages. Slim lifted Jess into his arms and carried him into the bedroom. Mose had opened the door for Slim and Said "I'll get the doc." and with that he left for town not taking the time to change the horses.
Seth was on the road when he met the stage only a few miles from the ranch. Jess was moaning and his blue eyes fluttered open. "Slim," Jess called! "I'm here Jess, lay still the doc will be here soon." Jess cried out and grabbed Slims arm. "Did you see the Indians Jess?" Slim asked, trying to take his mind off the pain. "No, no one Slim," he said through a moan. "Oh God it hurts, pull the arrow out Slim!" his voice almost a yell. "Easy Jess, easy, I have to check it out first." A wave of relief came over Slim as Seth entered the room. "Boy am I sure glad to see you doc." Seth sat on the edge of the bed checking Jess. "Slim I'll have to operate to get this arrow out, Daisy will you clean off the table for me." Just then a knock on the door and Mort let himself in. He too had met the stage and Mose told him about Jess. Daisy appeared in the doorway and let Seth know the table was ready. Seth looked at Slim, he was about to ask Slim to help him carry Jess, but before the words could be spoken, Slim reached down and pulled Jess into his arms. He carefully maneuvered Jess through the doorway and into the kitchen gently placing him on the table that Daisy had covered with a sheet. He stepped back and looked down at Jess; his eyes were closed tight against the pain. As Seth left the bedroom he whispered for Mort to take Slim outside for a while. "Slim," Mort spoke softly and taking Slim by the elbow, said "lets see if we can find any tracks where you found Jess."
Mort and Slim walk to where Jess had been laying. The axe was on the ground and his shirt and gun belt hung on a hook by the side of the barn. The two walked around looking closely at the ground for any signs. After twenty minutes Slim said, "Its no use Mort, all I see are the tracks that look like ours, I don't see any signs of Indians." "That's the part that's bothering me Slim, unless some escaped the reservation and I would have heard if they had, it just doesn't make any sense" Mort added. The two headed toward the house, but as they reached the porch, Mort grabbed Slims arm and said "it would be better if we stayed here until the doc's finished." Slim sat down in the chair by the door. "Why Jess? He's had more then his share of getting hurt," Mort had no time to respond. Just then Seth opened the door and stepped onto the porch and before Slim had a chance to ask, Seth informed them that Jess would be just fine in a few weeks. "Can I see him?" Slim asked. "Yes," Seth said "and I will need you to move him back to bed, but you may want to have a look at this first." In his hand was the arrow head and the shaft he had cut off. "I've removed many arrows, but none of them looked like this." Slim reached out and took them from Seth. "Mort this arrow was made in a forge, pounded flat and sharpened on a stone, not the work of an Indian." "Whoever hurt Jess did it deliberate!" "But who and why?" Mort asked. Mort could see the anger building in Slim. Just then Daisy appeared at the door and told Seth that Jess was beginning to stir. Seth said to Slim, that Jess should be moved before he is fully awake. The anger left Slim's face as his thoughts returned to Jess. Slim moved quickly through the door followed by Seth and Mort. Slim walked over to the table and looked down at Jess. He was very pale and it was evident that he was in pain even though he was unconscious as his head moved from side to side. Daisy stood next to him resting her hand on his arm. There was a big bandage covering his shoulder. "Slim," Seth's voice brought him back to the present and with that he carefully lifted Jess. Daisy was in the bedroom and had pulled the covers down on Slim's bed, "put him here Slim, I need to change the bedding on his" Daisy said. Seth held his head up pressed a spoonful of laudanum through his lips followed by a small amount to water. He left the bottle of laudanum and gave them some instruction adding that he would be back tomorrow afternoon and to keep him as still as possible. Mort stated that he would ride back to town with the doc. As he was leaving he laid a reassuring hand on Slim's shoulder, saying he would do some checking around.
After they left, Daisy told Slim that she needed to take care of Mike, as he had been sent to his room before the operation began. "I'm sorry Daisy," Slim said "I totally forgot, tell Mike he can come see Jess before he goes to bed and you get some sleep to, I'll tend to Jess tonight." Over the next few days Jess was in and out of consciousness, he developed a slight fever, but Seth said that was to be expected.
It had been three days since Jess had the arrow removed and he was awake more now that the Laudanum was only used at night to help him sleep. They had given him water and broth as much as they could get into him. Seth said he could have a more substantial breakfast as he couldn't afford to loose any more weight. Jess was glad for that. Daisy brought in a tray of eggs, bacon, toast and a cup of coffee and even though he was hungry he could only eat about half. They talked while Jess ate. "Can you think of anyone who would want to hurt you", Slim asked knowing it was probably a crazy question as he knew of Jess' past and the deputy work he had done since he'd been here. "Yeah, but none who would use an arrow, a bullet maybe but no arrow, and from what you said it was hand made." "They sell hunting arrows at the general store but none like this one and Mort said no one had bought any in a long while. Most are made of stone anyway." "It had to be someone who is out to even a score with you and not get caught" Slim said. "Just about every ranch has a forge." Mort has visited most every ranch looking around for clues but has come up empty. Jess' eyes were getting heavy and started to close. Daisy had taken the tray away, asking Jess if he could eat a little more, but he just shook his head no. Slim lifted his head removing the extra pillow and gently lowered his head down. He was asleep in seconds. Slim walked into the living room but was met with a stern look from Daisy. "You need rest Slim." she said. "You've been up with Jess every night and he's asleep now so you go get some rest. I'll check on him and if I need you, I'll wake you." "Yours right Daisy, thanks I am tired" and with that Slim returned to the bedroom. After checking on Jess he removed his boots and shirt. He laid down on Jess's bed and it wasn't long before he was sleeping soundly. The next few days found Jess getting stronger and being his stubborn self in wanting to get up. On the fifth day Seth finally allowed him up. He sat in front of the fireplace in the rocking chair. "Thanks Slim," Jess said. "I'm just glad you're okay and you're welcome, just don't go making it a habit of it" Slim said with a smile.
Chapter Four
The months passed and there was much caution taken at the ranch. Slim hardly let Jess out of his sight and it was making Jess irritable. "Slim, I don't need a babysitter!" Jess yelled. "I know, but I just don't want to take any chance with your life and I don't want you getting hurt again. Whoever put that arrow in your chest could try again." Jess put his hands on Slim's shoulder, "Slim, I'm sorry I didn't mean to yell but whoever it was probably would have tried again by now if he was going to and I need some space, okay?" "Alright Jess, but be extra careful even here at the ranch." "I will grandma." Jess teased and gave Slim's shoulder a squeeze. Daisy yelled that dinner was ready and the four of them sat and ate a wonderful meal of chicken, dumpling and apple pie, before retiring for the night.
Chapter Five January 29th
The weather had turned really bitter cold. Slim and Jess saddled up and rode out. As they reached the crest of the hill Slim turned to the south and Jess the north. They had agreed on only looking for strays for two hours them meeting back at the crest as the sky was showing signs of snow and it might be the last change they get for quite some time. Slim turned and looked as Jess rode off, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong and almost followed after him. But leaving the feeling there he started out in his own direction. Jess had gone on for about thirty minutes when two shot rang out, one hitting him in the top of his shoulder. The force of it knocked him from Travelers back and into the snow. The second shot creased the right flank of Traveler who took off running toward the ranch. Jess was not aware that Traveler had been hit only that he was gone. Jess lay still, his mind raced, his shoulder was bleeding but he was certain it was only a graze. Whoever it was couldn't get a clean shot without coming closer and that's what Jess was counting on. Jess had pulled his gun from the holster - waiting - perfectly still. After a few minutes Jess could hear the movement of a single horse making its way through the snow. The horse started to run. Jess pulled himself to his feet - gun aiming, ready to shoot - but he couldn't. He could see the long hair and outline of a woman. Her face was covered by a scarf and she was carrying a bucket in her hand. As he could not see a rifle; his mind told him that this could not have been the person who shot him. She was only a few feet from him now. She turned her horse and flung the content of the bucket on Jess. Jess looked shocked as the oily water mix from the bucket drenched him. He tried to wipe his eyes as he dove for the horse. He managed to get one hand on the saddle. But the rider was ready and come down hard with a knife to his upper arm. Jess screamed in pain, let loose his grip and fell back into the snow, - the rider was gone. Jess sat up and pulled the knife from his arm. He was so very cold and began to shake. His clothes were beginning to freeze to his body. He could here a horse coming from behind him and he know this time he would have to shoot her. He turned trying to get his freezing fingers to hold the gun. "Jess, don't shoot its me!" Slim yelled.
Slim climbed down from Alamo and knelt by Jess. "I heard the shots; I got here as soon as I could. I had a feeling something was wrong." Jess was shaking so hard he couldn't talk. Slim removed his own coat and shirt, and as quickly as he could he removed Jess' coat and shirt replacing them with his own. He saw the blood from his shoulder and arm; his shoulder would have to wait as it wasn't bleeding badly, but his arm was bleeding and was it seeping right through Slim's jacket. Slim removed his bandana and tied it around his arm on the outside of the jacket. The front of Jess' jeans were soaked. Slim knew that time was not on his side as frost bite in this weather was very serious. Slim helped Jess up on Alamo and covered him with the bedroll, tucking it in around his legs the best he could. Slim climbed up and spurred Alamo in the direction of the ranch. It seemed like an eternity as Slim had only his undershirt and jeans to keep him warm. Jess had passed out which was a relief to Slim, as Jess' shaking was wearing him out trying to hold on to him. Slim knew no one was home. Daisy was away visiting relatives and Mike with staying with friends for a few days. The house was dark but warm as Slim entered. The fireplace had been stoked before they had left, for which he was grateful. He carried Jess over to the leather couch and covered him with the two quilts that were folded at the bottom. He pulled the couch in front of the fireplace. He ran back outside and grabbed Alamo's reins. Traveler stood in front of the barn, as he opened the door, Traveler ran inside.
Slim quickly unsaddled both horses and threw a blanket on their backs. He knew that it was all he could do for now as Jess needed him more. Slim placed two more logs in the fireplace and started the stove to boil water. He entered the bedroom that he and Jess shared grabbing a pile of blankets, sheet and towels from the cedar chest. It was almost dark now. Slim lit all the lights in the living room and kitchen and began to remove the cloths from Jess. They were no longer frozen to him as the heat of the house and quilts had thawed them. Slim took the towels and put them in the very hot water. He laid the towels on a blanket rolling them up to remove as much water as possible. He then placed the hot towels over the length of Jess' body and covered him with many blankets and quilts. He bandaged both Jess' shoulder and arm and although his wounds had bled they were not that serious. He would send for the doc with the morning stage as his arm probably would need stitches, but for now the bandage was holding. Slim continued to change the towels and rubbed Jess' chest and legs through the blankets. Slim finally removed the towels now that Jess was warmer and his shaking had subsided. Slim was exhausted, as he sat on the floor next to the couch he fell asleep, his hand resting on Jess' chest.
It was just before dawn when Jess opened his eyes. He could feel the heavy weight of blankets on him. He tried to turn on his side. Jess' stirring awakened Slim. Slim sat up and stretched as he was very stiff and sore. "You feeling better?" he asked. Jess answered "some" but his voice was scratchy. "Wait a minute Jess; I'll get you some water." As Slim passed the fireplace he put some more wood on it, returning he held the cup to Jess' lips. "Jess do you remember anything about what happened before I arrived?" "Slim, it was a woman!" "I don't know if she was the one who shot me, but she was the one who threw the water and stabbed me in the arm." Jess stated. "Did you get a look at her?" Slim asked. "Only her hair which was blond and she was thin. Her face was covered with a scarf." "Oh and her horse was reddish like Alamo with three white stockings and a small white blaze on his face, I think the mane and tail were darker." Jess said. "That's good Jess at least it something to go on." "You rest now." Slim said. "I need to tend to our horses and I'll bring in the knife she used to stab you. I put it in the saddle bag with your gun and jacket."
Chapter Six
Slim went to the barn to tend to the horses. When he removed the blanket from Traveler, he discovered the wound on his right flank. Slim cleaned it an applied salve. After he fed and watered both horses, he covered them again with a blanket. That chore being done, he returned to the house to fix breakfast and make some coffee. Jess was asleep. He fixed bacon, eggs, bread and coffee for himself. At eleven he helped Mose change the team, told him about Jess and asked him to send the doc and Mort out. About an hour later Mort arrived telling Slim the doc would be here soon. Slim told Mort what Jess had said as he poured them both coffee. "Slim I've been thinking about this and I've read and reread my reports on all the incidents starting with the bad water. Each time Jess has been hurt it was the 29th of the month, July 29, September 29, and now January 29, that exact day every time. "It must mean something to whoever is doing this to Jess." Mort said. "I'll look back and see if Jess was involved in anything that was on the 29th of the month and I'll also check for a horse that fits that description." The doc's carriage pulled up in front of the house. As Slim opened the door all Seth could say was "Not Jess again." "'Fraid so doc" Slim answered "it's not as bad as last time; at least I don't think so."
Jess was awake now and in pain. Seth changed the bandage on his shoulder and put seven stitches in his arm then applied a fresh bandage. Slim had sat in the chair on the other side of the couch. As Slim slid into place, Jess reached out and squeezed his arm as each stitch was entered and each wound dressed. After Slim took the cloth from the basin and wiped down Jess' face and neck. Jess had some minor frost bite on the front of his legs but Seth said it would heal just fine. His chest and arms were okay due to the quick thinking of Slim. He told Jess he'd be back tomorrow and he was to stay put for the next three or four days. Seth left some medicine for the pain. Mort took the chair that the doctor had been sitting in as Slim returned to his on the other side of Jess. "I know we've been over this before Jess, but think again, any ideas on who would want to hurt you?" Mort asked. "No, not any women I can think of, men sure but not a woman" Jess stated. "You sure it was a woman?" "Course I'm sure Mort, I can tell a woman when I see one." "Easy Jess." Slim said as he looked on in concern for his friend. "I've been trying to think of all the blond women around town and the outlying ranches and a few come to mind - let's see Mort went on - there's Mrs. Langly, but she due anytime now and Miss Roulins, but she not five feet tall." Mort listed several other names but none quite fit Jess' description. Jess's eyes were staring to close. Slim tapped Mort on the arm pointing to Jess. Both men walked quietly over to the table as Slim poured more coffee. They talked for a while and Mort said he was going back to town to do some research. He also noted that with the bad weather coming in, it would probably be several days before he could get back out and would keep Jess in his thoughts.
Slim knew the stage would not run in bad weather. He asked Mort to swing by the Branford's place where Mike was staying and ask them to keep Mike there until the storm was over and the roads passable. Jess had been asleep and had missed breakfast and lunch. While Jess slept, Slim fixed some ham, potatoes, bread and coffee. He fixed Jess a plate, leaving it on the table and went over to Jess. He hated to wake him but he knew Jess needed to eat something, he could rest after. Slim gently shook him; his eyes opened. He looked around not sure of where he was. It had been seven hours since Mort left. "You feelin' better? Think you can eat something?" Jess softly answered "Yeah I think so." Slim carefully lifted Jess' head and shoulders and propped pillows up behind him. Slim brought over the tray and laid it on his lap. "Thanks Slim." Jess said. "Better wait till you taste it first." "No Slim, not for the food, but for taking care of me and being there for me." Not letting Jess finish, Slim added, "You're the same as Andy to me and my family always comes first." Jess couldn't speak now as his throat started to tighten and his eyes began to sting. Slim was also emotional as he said "eat!." Slim told Jess about Mort's theory about the 29th of the month. He told him - if that was the case then they would be ready for February 29th and there was a 29th as this year was leap year. It was snowing really hard out now and Slim figured the doc would not be returning for a few days. Jess ate what he could and started to fell back to sleep as Slim appeared with a spoonful of laudanum. Jess did not complain and swallowed the awful tasting liquid followed by a few sips of water. Slim pulled the rocking chair up in front of the fireplace putting his feet on the hearth he fell asleep.
Slim was awaken by the sounds of Jess moaning. He moved over to the chair by the couch. Jess was fevered, but it wasn't too high and as the morning broke so did his fever. It snowed for another day. Jess was sore but feeling better. Slim had tended to Traveler many times over the past three days and his wound was healing nicely. He decided not to tell Jess as he wanted to wait and make sure his horse would be okay. He also knew that once Jess found out about Traveler, he would want to check on him and that's the last thing Slim wanted. Traveler would be completely healed by the time Jess could ride again. It was five days before Seth returned bringing Mike home with him.
Mike ran to Jess. "Easy Mike" Slim said "he's still got stitches." Mike hugged Jess and started to cry. "Hey Tiger, I'm okay," but the words that had welled up in Mike came out. "No, you're not Jess, someone's trying to kill you and I'm scared." Jess pulled Mike to him. "It'll be okay, Mike - Slim, Mort and I - we'll get em Tiger, you trust me don't you?" "Well sure I do Jess, I just don't want you getting hurt no more." Mike cried. "I'll second that Mike." Slim said. "Now, let loose of Jess so Seth can checked on him." After changing the bandages he told Jess that he would be just fine in another two weeks, but to give it at least another week after that before riding. Slim told Seth he would make sure Jess listened as Jess scowled at him.
Chapter Seven
The end of February was quickly approaching, everyone was on edge. Slim would not let Jess out of his sight no matter how much Jess complained. Mort had been really busy with town problems and was only about half way through looking at all the court and deputy records. Today was February 27th. Jess and Slim had ridden into Laramie to see if Mort had found anything. He was reading a court transcript when they arrived. "Find anything" Slim asked. "No, not yet anyway." "Have a chair, boys" he said as he handed them some papers to read through. They had been reading for about an hour when Jess said "hears something." Both Slim and Mort listened as Jess told them what it said. "Remember almost three years ago you were out of town Mort and you asked both Slim and I to fill in for you?" "You needed both of us because there were some gold shipments going through Laramie" Jess said. "Oh, I remember now, that guy who tried to rob the stage you and I were guarding. You ended up killing him, what was his name?" Slim asked. "Mark Anderson and as I recall he had a wife, they were both in their thirty's." Jess added. "I also remember that before I shot him, he shot you up pretty bad." "Yeah I remember that all to well, I was laid up for a month." Slim said. "Does it say when he was killed?" Jess read a little further on. "July 29, it was July 29th; you were right Mort that date is important to someone." All three stopped and looked at each other, slim saying "that's when you were sick with the bad water." Slim was on his feet leaning over Jess. "Does it say where she went and what her name was?" "Says here her name is Julie and it seems to me she did have long blond hair." Jess remembered. Mort spoke up, "I remember she took his body up to the old Palmer place, I think they were staying there at the time, but she must have left, as I don't ever recall seeing her again." "C'mon Jess lets ride out there and see" Slim said. Mort added, "Be careful, because if it is her and she is there she probable wouldn't hesitate to kill you this time Jess." We will and with that they both rode out.
Chapter Eight
A little ways from the cabin they dismounted and tied up their horses. It cabin looked deserted. By the edge of the yard was a grave with a wooden cross, but no name. They carefully checked out the cabin - guns drawn. It was empty. It looked like no on had been staying there for quite sometime. They split up and checked the back, it was also clear. The only thing left was the barn. They entered staying low. Jess went to the right and Slim to the left. "Nothing here either." Slim said. They turned and started toward the door. Just then a figure ran past. "Slim!" Jess yelled as they both started to run to the barn door. Suddenly the floor gave way and time seemed to stand still. For a few seconds Jess was stunned, he was still holding his gun, his side was burning and bleeding. He looked down; something had pierced his side and was still in there. He looked around for Slim, not seeing him he started to move the boards and hay. He was just a few inches from Jess, buried under the debris. Jess carefully removed the boards as Slim started to stir moaning in pain. "Easy Slim." Jess said as he helped him set up. Slim's arm was broken and he was bleeding from the side of the head. Jess heard movement from above. He froze pointing his gun in the direction of the sound. A man from up in the loft called down. "Throw your guns up or I'll shoot Sherman." Jess grabbed the guns and threw them.
A figure with long blond hair appeared at the edge of the pit. Looking at Jess she said "Do you remember me? I told you three years ago I was going to kill you." "Yeah, you're Julie Anderson." Jess said. Just then two other men joined her. "These are my brothers, they helped me get you." Jess yelled "let Slim go, I was the one who shot your husband!" "No, he was there too when Mark died!" she said. "Watching him die will hurt you more before I finally kill you!" "I hurt you and Sherman had to watch you suffer and now it's your turn to watch!" One of her brothers aimed a gun at Slim. Jess tried to block it but the shot hit Slim in the leg. Slim cried out! "Now the other leg." she said. Jess flared with anger. As he aimed at Slim and pulled the trigger, Jess jumped in front of Slim. This time the bullet hit Jess. Just then a shot gun blast and the words "hold it right there, if any of you move it will be your last." The voice was Mort Cory.
Four men rushed up and took their guns. The woman was screaming as they dragged her away, "No! Harper has to die, he has to!" Mort raced to the pit, "hold on boys, well have you out soon - how bad is it?" "Sure glad to see you Mort!" Jess yelled. "Slims not doing too well, he's got a broken arm, he's bleeding from the side of the head and they shot him in the leg." "How about you Jess?" Mort asked. "I took one in the leg also, and something pierced me in the side." Jess sat down beside Slim, "it's over Slim". Slim could only nod his head as the pain overtook him.
The ranch was closer then town. Mort sent one deputy to the ranch to get the buckboard and to prepare Daisy and another to Laramie to get the doc. Mort and Chris his deputy tied up there wounds the best they could, then sat down to wait for the wagon. "Mort, what brought you out here?" Jess wondered. "Well when you left the office I watched from the window. I thought someone might be watching you. At first I didn't see anything out of the ordinary, then I saw her, a woman with long blond hair dressed in black galloping out of town in the direction you two went. They must have been watching you both for a long time." I rounded up deputies and headed here." "Sorry I didn't get here sooner though" Mort responded. "That's okay Mort, you got here and that's what counts, we'd be dead by now if it wasn't for you and your deputies, thanks Mort." Jess said.
Both Slim and Jess laid in the back of the buckboard, the ride home was painful and by the time they arrived Seth was already there. The deputy had informed him of their injuries and he was ready. So was Daisy, or so she thought, but upon seeing the wounds on both of her 'sons' she stared to cry. Mort pulled her to him. "They'll be okay Daisy" Mort said. She composed herself and followed them into the bedroom. Seth was already working on Slim. She looked at Jess and started to work also. Chris stayed and was helping to undress Slim. Mort helped Daisy remove Jess' jeans and shirt. Daisy put a bandage on his leg and side. The bullet was still in there. His side had something just visible at the edge of the skin; Daisy thought it might be a nail. Daisy knew she would need Seth when he finished with Slim. Daisy sat on the bed wiping down Jess' face and neck. Leaving Slim for a minute, Seth came over to assess Jess' condition. He handed her the bottle of laudanum, instructing her to give him a spoonful and he returned to Slim. Seth bandaged Slim's head. Seth told Slim that because of his head injury he would not be able to give him any chloroform. Seth asked Mort and Chris to hold him down; luckily the bullet wasn't in too deep. Jess had laid there - tense- listening to Slim moan, he saw him grab hold of Mort's arm, and he wanted so badly to help. Next Seth told Slim he needed to set his broken arm and with the first pull Slim passed out, which was a relief to all in the room. Seth now turned his attention to Jess. Jess was able to take the Laudanum that Daisy had given him about half hour before. Seth also handed Daisy the Chloroform and covering his mouth and nose with it, Jess felt no more pain. It took five weeks for everything to heal up. Julie Anderson and her brothers were sentenced to thirty years in prison for two counts of attempted murder.
Epilogue
April 5th
Even though it was only April the weather had turned warm. Daisy, Mike Slim, and Jess were celebrating. Daisy had made a picnic and they were all down by the lake enjoying the good food and warm sun. The ordeal was over and the Andersons were in prison. It had made the bond between Slim and Jess stronger then ever. Daisy smiled as she watched 'her' three boy's fish, she loved and cherished each of them very much. As Mort rode up, Slim hollered back at him, "your late Mort, c'mon grab a pole!" Mort too had become an important part of the family. As Mort took a seat by Slim, Daisy handed him a plate of food. "Thanks Daisy, this looks great." Daisy looked Mort in the eyes and said "No, thank you Mort, for giving my family back to me." The 29th day of each month will always be a reminder of the love four people have for each other and the struggles that made them a family.
